Carnell's Funeral Home
Carnell's Funeral Home, one of the oldest and largest funeral homes in the province, has been dedicated to providing leadership in the funeral industry since 1804. Carnell's Funeral Home serves all families with understanding and compassion. Please take some time to review our facilities and learn more about how our family has been serving yours for over 200 years.

When Gilbert Carnell, a wheelwright and carriage builder, opened a carriage factory on the corner of Duckworth and Cochrane Streets in St. John's in 1780, little did he know that he was establish. It was during Andrew G. Carnell's time, that the company became directly involved in undertaking and embalming.
Services
We are so very blessed to have known such an incredible woman She was the strongest, kindest, most loving, and faithful person we know. She mothered everyone, so much so that friends would often call her "mom". Predeceased by daughters Donna and Catherine (David Power), sisters Julie, Caroline, and Jemima and brothers Albert, Freeman, Ferdinand and Andrew.
It wasn't long ago, no more than 10 to 15 years, when a family walked into a funeral home that the funeral director knew exactly what they wanted. Consequently for many each funeral seemed to be a carbon copy of the previous one. Today that is not the case. Because of changes in funeral services and consumer attitudes, funeral directors have no idea what to expect when a family walks through the door.
Simply speaking, memorialization is any way a person chooses to celebrate a life that has been lived. Many people choose permanent forms of memorialization, but in fact, your choices are limited only by your imagination. Many families consider items as simple as a funeral notice, or a eulogy fitting memorials.
Many people have the mistaken impression that in order to preplan your funeral or the funeral of a loved one, you must also prepay it. Actually, the choice to prefund or prepay one's funeral service is simply an option, not a requirement. Why then are there hundreds of millions of dollars now on deposit throughout Canada for prearranged funerals?
These services entail the repatriation of human remains all over the world. It can involve cremation or the reparation, dressing, placement of remains in a hermetic sealer, casketing and arranging the shipment of these remains to the deceased's country of origin. In the past we have shipped to Germany, Greece, Ukraine, Portugal, Philippines, US, etc. and other parts of Canada.

Carnell's is very much showing its age. The carpets and furniture have not been updated in a decade, and dusting appears to occur on a slightly shorter annual schedule. Attempts to move forward technologically with photo slide shows is affected by the staff not paying attention to the fact warning messages and updates are displayed on the screens for hours.
There is no doubt that constantly dealing with death can become tiresome, but if you can't show pride in your work, it's time to move on.
