Since 1995 The Better Butcher and owner Randy Hnatuk have been on a mission to deliver the finest quality, sustainably raised meats to Calgary customers. Our goal is to support a meat industry completely free of hormones and antibiotics. In this endeavour, The Better Butcher's suppliers come from local farms in Southern Alberta who are as committed to ethically raised livestock as we are!
Mountain View Poultry is located just west of Okotoks and supplies The Better Butcher with free-run broiler chickens. Their poultry is not fed antibiotics and they process the birds they raise in their own provincially inspected plant. Ewe-Nique Farms raises their lambs free-range on the lush pastures of their family farm in Southern Alberta.

Went in for the first time, ignored the hostile look from the owner just staring at me and was greeted warmly by a wonderful customer service lady. Looking for some beef ribs, found some frozen, great price. Do you always have these at this price? Yes We can't get rid of them so we freeze them. Thanks you have a regular customer I love these things. Went back today and the customer service lady saw me and left suddenly. The hostile owner served me. 'No. We don't have frozen and if we did it wouldn't be at the price you got last week.' 'That isn't what I was led to expect' I tried to say twice but

The service is very friendly & knowledgeable , but their maple breakfast sausage is the best I have ever had . The beef & onion sausage tastes like an entire Shepards pie in your mouth . The lemon pepper sausage is super good , and the sausage prices are very reasonable for such high quality. Usually a small line up to get in . A really good butcher is few and far in-between

I had a craving for fajitas so decided to try out The Better Butcher based on their Google reviews.
I bought 3 items. Beef jerky, skirt steak, and sausages.
The jerky was really good. Nicely flavoured and not over dried. I give the jerky 5 stars.
The skirt steak was a little pricey (ironic for a "cheap cut"). It was butchered with the strip width a little on the narrow side. I prefer at least twice as wide as their cut. That all said the quality was very good and after marinading for 6 hours then grilling, the carne asada tasted great and was as tender as you can get it without chemical tenderizer

To be honest, the customer service was exceptional. I was immediately greeted upon entering the store and asked what I was looking for. I mentioned that I was on a strict diet, and was looking for grass fed only beef/products. She pointed out every product in that criteria without hesitation, and even broke out the ingredients list for me to see. Refreshing experience, attention to detail and understanding. Wish other business in general could be the same! Definitely will return. Products themselves were very good, beef sausage and top sirloins were quality.

I never knew that beef, pork and chicken could taste so good. I thought I was happy with products I was getting from the big stores but I am converted now. The quality and flavor of the meats at the Better… Butcher literally shocked me. Everything is sourced from trusted local farms with long standing reputations and it shows. Now I understand why there are lineups even before it opens.

Been bringing my big game elk in for past 5 years for there cheese sausage smokies. Tonight they were too busy cleaning up at 525 then to help me. Then they said oh yea we’re not taking wild game anymore. I buy… 1000’s $ of steak and other meat products from you . I will take my business to another butcher. You tend to say your family run and to the lady behind the counter tonight, you must have had somewhere to go and didn’t want anything to do with my order or customer service! Won’t be back to this butcher and I will tell any other hunters to avoid this place!

Wish I could give more than 5 stars! I had heard of this butcher from friends and have really liked their meat, service, and it is very reasonably priced.
I had not told them that i was using their meat in a Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned BBQ competition this past weekend, and had bought meat off the shelf. My smoked pork butt placed 2nd, brisket was top at the table of judges it went through, but they were stingy with their points so it placed 13th (it was the best brisket i have ever tasted and i am still enjoying the leftovers). My timing was off on my chicken and ribs and they were done

When I heard that the supposed-trustworthy chain supermarkets are pumping saline solution into chicken and other meat products to add plumpness and retain shelf freshness, I decided on a little inconvenience and start buying most meat products only from highly-reputable real butcher shops in the city.
Hence, as I know M&M as a former employee, and Urban Butcher to be of the same stamp, who build in shortcuts and don't have an active qualified butcher onsite, I found The Better Butcher.
After pointedly talking to the Randy (owner) and his staff, I decided to order 30 bone-in chicken thighs

This is the only place that we get our steaks and beef jerky. All of the staff are knowledgeable and the service is amazing. Call ahead if you want a larger amount of anything and they will have it ready for you. I drive across town to them. They know where the meat comes from as they know their ranchers. AMAZING!!!!

I have been going to this butcher shop off and on for 5 years as it is the closes one to me. The products are good and place is clean. Every time i ask about hormone free and no anti biotics they tell me all there meats are fee from those. That means chicken , pork , lamb and beef. When I ask them where , what farm , they never say directly or give some vague answer like from a number of different suppliers. That is not what I want to here as second to none meats tells me what farms for poultry, pork. They tell me how long beef is on grass and on grain (last 4 weeks) . They answer exactly the question

I think this is a great local butcher. The quality and selection of meats far surpasses what you would find at a local grocery store. So far, we have tried to ground meat (beef and turkey), chicken legs, sausage, and bacon. Everything has been full of flavor and super easy to cook. The ground beef we made into this delicious meat sauce that barely needed any spices.
The butcher is in a decent sized shop and has all of your major cuts of meat. There is limited seafood as the bread and butter seems to be the pork/beef. There is a good selection of chicken and turkey products as well as some cornish

Love this place as well. So friendly, and didn't scoff when I asked for silly information as I am new to the butcher scene. Only thing a little irritating is when I went in later in the day they wouldn't cut any portion of meat for me as the butcher himself wasn't there. Seems odd given that's the business.
