Capital Periodontics was established by Dr. Avi Shelemay in 2008 in Barrhaven, serving the Ottawa and the Ottawa valley communities. Dr. Shelemay is a board certified Periodontist. His philosophy is - Patient care comes first. We aim to provide a high standard of periodontal care while treating patients in a warm, caring environment.
Dr. Avi Shelemay opened Capital Periodontics in Barrhaven in November of 2008. In addition to running his practice, Dr. Shelemay is currently a Clinical Instructor at the University of Toronto School of Dentistry. At U of T, Dr. Shelemay works with the Periodontal graduate residents. He teaches periodontal surgery including gum grafts, and the placement of dental implants.
Crown lengthening is indicated for teeth with deep fillings that need crowns or teeth that are fractured before a filling or crown is to be placed. Management of gum recession consists primarily of two types of treatments, both of which involve gum grafting. Periodontal Disease, or "gum disease", is the breakdown of the gums and bone surrounding the tooth, as a result of plaque and tartar build-up.
A periodontist is a dentist specialist who has completed a university post-graduate specialty program in periodontics. In order to become a periodontist, it is necessary to study for three additional years after graduating dental school. Periodontics is focused on the heath of the tissues supporting the teeth, including the gums and the bone.
As we continue to grow our periodontal practice, it is important to Dr. Shelemay and the whole Capital Periodontics Team to give back to the Ottawa community. We are very proud to be a part of such wonderful organizations and support great causes. 2016 and 2017: Dr. Shelemay volunteered two weeks of his time doing dentistry in Uganda with the Medical Dental Team Bridge To Health.

The experience at Capital Periodontist with Dr. Shelemay and his team was outstanding. I went in for a gum graft - my first one. I have heard many horror stories, but Dr. Shelemay and his team made me feel comfortable and informed throughout the process - from visibility and understanding of the procedures and risks, to scheduling (which by the way, never had to wait more than 5 mns, Dr. Shelemay is very puntual), to expectations pre and post-op. By no means is a gum graft a pleasant experience - but the outcome was well worth it, and the support from his team made it as good as it can possibly

As for Dr SHELEMAY- he is the best. Extremely caring and thorough. Ensures he has all information required about your health. You never feel rushed; you have his full attention. Not only is he the best for implants and etc., with no pain and gentle treatment- but, you have fun at the same time. Great personality and bedside manner. I actually feel like I am his *only* client which of course I am not but with his kind manner and attention to your treatment it definitely

I had an extraction and dental implant done by Dr. Shelemay. At my first visit, I was given a detailed overview of my treatment options by Jessica, the treatment coordinator. Dr. Shelemay also examined me and explained the process. I felt very informed and understood the duration of treatment and costs.
The procedures themselves went great! I opted for sedation so I pleasantly don’t remember a thing. I had virtually no swelling and the minor discomfort I had was easily managed with ibuprofen. Dr. Shelemay gives you his cell number to call if you have any complications or severe pain. Happily

Dr. Shelemay and his team were fabulous in treating my young teen during her consultation, surgery and post-op follow-up care. There is a wonderful, uplifting vibe in the office - young, professional and positive. My teen was nervous about her procedure, but Dr. Shelemay and his team were thorough, caring and extremely patient. Fantastic team here at Capital Periodontics. After three consultations with other doctors, it was not until I met with Dr. Avi that I knew I was in good hands and that surgery was the last option rather than the first as the other two doctors felt were necessary and far more expensive. One of my teeth was messed up by a hygienist about 7 years ago from another clinic, and the gum bleeding issue have been… bothering me sine then. I had been to several clinics for teeth cleaning many times. The gum bleeding issue has never been fixed. I didn't even bother to mention it to Kelly. However, after Kelly finished the teeth cleaning, she told me everything is good, and there won't be bleeding when brushing teeth later on. To be honest, I was doubted at that moment when she said so, since I know that
