As a music student, it's important to take your theory requirements for RCM certification seriously. Finding a good teacher to guide you from the early levels through Levels 9, 10, and ARCT can be difficult. Many times, I'm approached by students or parents in large or small communities who are having difficulties finding a suitable teacher who can teach not only Intermediate Theory, but also advanced courses such as harmony and analysis.
The RCM now offers an online exam for Levels 9, 10 and ARCT History in lieu of the written exam. Our course content contains easy to follow video lessons describing each composition you're responsible for knowing, a glossary of terms and notes, online quizzes, listening tests as well as a complete practice exam and much more.
Students will be able to access the courses and materials here for all harmony, history, analysis and intermediate theory courses and can follow each step week by week. Each week's work consists of viewing pre-recorded lesson content, online quizzes, as well as a live tutorial where students meet online with me, Stephan Tan, to reinforce concepts, discuss how the material relates to the exam and to ask and answer any questions.
Remember that the student will use the login information you set to login and access the course content. You will need this login info to register for future courses. You will find your course at the Profile page. If you don't see it there, let us know and we'll take care of it! You're welcome to get started straight away, though the live tutorials will not begin until the specified day and time.
If this is your first experience with online theory, you may a little concerned with whether this learning format will be effective for you. The important thing to remember is that convenient doesn't mean easy. Harmony material is much different than Intermediate Theory. It's more advanced and requires a lot of study.

My daughter has studied with Stephan on RCME theory for over 2 years and passed every one of them with good marks. Stephan is an awesome, professional and patient teacher all along the way. I have studied here for 12 years and have a had a great music experience. Had lessons for violin, piano, flute, and theory and received honours or above for all my RCM violin, piano, and theory exams. Stephan helped me complete all my piano and theory exams for my performers ARCT exam in violin and I received an honours with distinction (90) for my ARCT. All the teacher's here are very kind and amazing! Stephan Tan gives incredible and clear instruction, is very patient, and flexible as well! Highly recommend.

My son Joshua had to do a Grade 10 History course last minute for exam requirement and did it in 4 weeks of time with the help of Stephan's course. He got 98% which far exceeded our expectations. Doing this online saved us a lot of time with our busy schedule and we would definitely enroll again in the future!

We've known Mr. Tan for 7 years. He's taught my 3 children music theory from the basic level all the way to ARCT diploma level. All my children take lessons at Tan Music with different teachers - piano, online theory and vocal. When I was growing up, I hardly ever looked forward to lessons; however, my children love going to lessons and even want to stick around afterwards. The school environment is so inviting and comfortable for both parents and students. I particularly enjoy the recitals! All the students seem so self motivated to perform and even enjoy mingling backstage and afterwards in the lobby. It's nice to see friendships formed beyond the lessons. Both my son and daughter were taking private theory lessons and the highest my daughter scored was in the 80's and my son didn't do well at all. At first, I was a bit apprehensive about the online program but Stephan Tan cleared any doubts that I had. He is a very patient, meticulous, motivating and above all kind teacher.
