Originally a private health club, it fell on hard times and was taken over by the City of Cambridge. The Cambridge YMCA assumed the management of the club and ran it successfully for several years. When the YMCA decided to build a new facility, the decision was made to close the Southwood operation.
A group of loyal squash players and weight lifters approached the City putting forward a proposal to continue operating a fitness facility run by its members. During the early years, many volunteers worked very hard to establish the club and get it onto a sound financial footing. Now, some 25 years later, Southwood continues as a fitness club run by its members for its members.
