Any time of the day or night, when you have a horse health emergency, we are just a phone call away. We provide farm call services from our base operations in the Comox Valley, as well as North, West and Mid-Vancouver Island, several Gulf Islands, and Powell River. Epona Equine is a mobile farm call practice, however, when special circumstances require hospitalization and 24/7 veterinary supervision, we utilize the horse stabling and treatment facilities at Van Isle Veterinary Hospital in Courtenay.

Anne Marie Guillemaud, owner and veterinarian, is an 'Island Girl' and grew up in Port McNeill. Annie has loved horses her entire life. She was a member of the Ports North Pony Club, achieving her Horsemanship Level A. Some of you may remember her from her time showing horses in the Comox Valley under her maiden name, De Leenheer.
There are many instances when it is neither economical nor convenient to transport horses for veterinary care, especially when sickness or lameness would compromise the horse's treatment and recovery. Fortunately, advances in mobile communications and veterinary technology have made it possible to outfit a vehicle with a wide range of veterinary supplies and equipment, so the 'hospital' can come to you.
When it comes to the treatment of colic, be aware that this is considered an emergency and time is of the essence. If you suspect your horse has colic, do not hesitate to call us to discuss your concerns. We are available to your assistance for this type of emergency 24/7. In addition to the standard colic exam, rectal exam and nasogastric intubation, we have digital ultrasound available, if a case requires a more in-depth evaluation.
Whether you need a Coggins test for heading south to the USA, for a local show, or you just want to be sure your horse is Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) negative, we have you covered! Dr. Guillemaud is accredited with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to perform Coggins testing and health paper examinations for Export to the USA.
A horse that is suffering from dental pain or having difficulty chewing may exhibit a variety of behavioral and/or physical health problems. That's why we recommend annual dental examinations for most horses. Dr. Guillemaud has a keen interest in equine dentistry and would be pleased to answer your dentistry questions.

A HUGE thank you to Dr Guillemaud, who last Monday night answered my desperate phone call. My husbands horse came down with colic while he was out of town hunting. Without knowing me - Dr Guillemaud sped out to help. Through her quick assessment and action Sunny survived and is once again happily grazing in the field with her buddy Meadow. Dr Guillemaud you are a hero! Thanks to all vets who answer our calls!

A couple of years ago, Dr. Plaxton was instrumental in helping save the eye-sight (and consequently the life) of a horse I was leasing. He had bi-lateral corneal ulcers and was in considerable pain and discomfort. Her care of this horse was outstanding, and I was impressed by her knowledge, commitment, compassion and professionalism. She even took the effort to consult with veterinary colleagues at various Universities, to ensure that she was doing everything possible for this horse. It was a long road to recovery, but he did recover and went on to lead a normal life. I highly recommend Epona Equine
