At Balsam Dental, we strive to minimize our ecological footprint and reduce consumption.
The use of digital radiography eliminates photo chemical wastes such as fixers, developers and cleaners. It reduces radiation from the dental office, which is better for patients and staff. We are constantly updating and revising our protocols, transitioning to a paperless office with the use of practice management software.

Your teeth should last you a lifetime. A healthy mouth allows you to chew properly, speak clearly, and smile confidently. Your oral health affects your general health. By caring for your natural teeth you are contributing to your overall well-being and enjoyment of life. When most people think of a dental examination, they think of an evaluation of the teeth.
Every day, plaque forms on your teeth. Dental plaque is actually a biofilm. A biofilm is a well-organized colony of bacteria that adheres to surfaces and is embedded in a slime layer. It is the bacteria in dental plaque that cause gum disease. Gingivitis, an early phase of gum disease, is an inflammation of the gums caused by the accumulation of dental plaque above the gum line.
The report showed that all children are at risk for tooth decay, and urged parents, the government, and the community to work together on prevention. Children are particularly vulnerable and suffer from this disease at an alarming rate. Tooth decay can be transmitted by licking a pacifier, sharing a spoon or kissing.
Cavities are caused when sugars in the food we eat and bacteria in our mouths mix together, producing a mild acid that eats away at the outer layer of our teeth (called enamel). To help prevent cavities, one of our dentists or hygienists can apply a hard coat of resin, called a sealant, to the biting surface of your children's molars or back teeth.
A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function and shape. The first step is to remove the decayed material from the tooth; the affected area is then cleaned, shaped and filled with a filling material. By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling helps protect the tooth by preventing further decay.

When Teresa worked in the front office there was great organization and she knew patients and dentals plans and when to recall patients. This has all changed - I have only been called once in the last year; not the regular four visits. I am very disappointed and I am thinking of changing my dentist office after 40 years

The neighbourhood has been forever changed. The new owners seem to think that they own beyond their property line. I have personally witnessed on two occasions a service technician (one Rogers, one Bell) being berated and bullied for parking their clearly marked service truck in the alley partially obstructing the dental offices driveway. (not because the dental office parking lot was full and there was little chance of anyone needing to leave the lot anytime soon, mind you). Even when it is explained that they are on a service call, need to climb the pole at the corner of the property etc

Having recently moved to the Beaches I was worried about the daunting task of finding a good dentist amidst a pandemic. I’m also a new mother and could only do appointments on weekends or after hours. Then I walked by Balsam Dental Clinic and saw a sign that says “New Patients Welcome. After Hours and Weekends Appointments available”. I picked up the phone and called and got an appointment right away! And my experience from there on was just perfect. Amazing staff - Dr. Lu is the kind of dentist who will explain every step of any procedure he performs and answer all your questions patiently

I wanted to say a big thank you to the amazing dentist, Dr.Elizabeth Macchioni, who took care of my 5yo during his recent check up and filling.
Finding out he needed a filling was a bit of a shock for both him and me; his elder brother hasn't needed them yet and we are all fastidious with brushing for the kids. But the dentist was calm and reassuring from the start.
Returning for the treatment itself, I did my best to explain in advance what would happen, but I needn't have worried. Dr E was absolutely kind. She had a wonderful story about fairies and magic to make her thorough and clear explanations

Last week I went to Balsam Dental for the second time. Lovey ladies at the front desk to greet their patients and handle their appointment or any other inquiries.
I had an appointment for the extraction with dr. Grace yoo. it was a pretty hard procedure but the doctor made it very comfortable for me. Thank you so much for your gentle care. It was a painless procedure.
I'm very thankful to dr. Grace and her team.
Also my two kids had an appointment with hygienist Amber. She handled them very nicely. Kids were very happy as well. Many many thanks for your patience to handle my kids.

I went to see Sarah (Registered Dental Hygienist) at Balsam Dental for my most recent dental cleaning. In short, it was the most comprehensive and informative dental experience I have ever had! Sarah is very thorough, explained exactly what she was doing and most importantly, exactly what was going on with my teeth. Suffice to say that her passion for dental hygiene is evident. She took the time to ensure I was comfortable and all my concerns were addressed. Thank you Sarah and everyone on the Balsam Dental team for making my visit so enjoyable. I will be back again soon!

Great Clinic! Great staff! Great experienced! There's a good vibe in everyone inside the clinic. I'm one of those who doesn't like to go to a dental clinic because of bad experienced but during my first appointment at Balsam Dental Clinic all the staff makes me feel comfortable. Katrina (dental hygienist) was so nice and very good in what she do. She made made everything easy for me. Katrina explained very well all the process that we were doing for me to understand and discussed the other things that I need to go through. Thank you!

I've been a nervous patient for most of my life but Balsam Dental is the most relaxing office I've ever visited. The lovely heritage home and fireplace in the waiting room make it a homey experience. I've been with several of their dentists over the years and all have been very good. Sarah, the hygienist is the best! And Teresa at the front desk provides a warm welcome. I actually look forward to visiting the dentist now 😊.

We had been going to Balsam Dental for a very long time before the business was sold to new owners. We were very happy with the previous business model, with the hygienists, with the receptionists, and with Dr. Caplan. We tried this new Balsam Dental for two years after the new owners took over, but have moved on to a new dental practice now. We found the new practice structure to be impersonal and off-putting. We just couldn't muster the same trust in most of the dentists that we had in Dr. Caplan. Exception is Dr. Yoo, who is great. Unfortunately, despite requesting her every time, I always

I went to Dr Caplan for several years until he retired. I was always very happy with his work and "chair-side" manner. I've never had any issues and recommended him whole heartedly to friends and family. Recently a few new dentists have joined the practice in light of Dr Caplan's departure. It's always a bit anxiety-provoking to see a new dentist but I was delighted that the new staff are carrying on the tradition of quality care. I had a cavity filled this evening by Dr Yu. She had a very gentle touch and performed the entire procedure quickly expertly, explaining the

I had been a patient of Dr Caplan for almost ten years. I found him to be thorough, kind, knowledgeable, and gentle. I was very upset when he retired a few years ago. Not fond of the businessman/dentist who purchased the practice as I got the feeling his first priority is financial growth and not dental health. Have found a new dentist now

Like the previous reviewer, I also had many fillings done by Dr Caplan-many years ago. Each time I went he said I needed a new filling -one day I just said no and went to a new dentist who found no indication of a cavity that needed filling. I am very concerned that the work he did was unnecessary especially since the thin shells of teeth surrounding the fillings are beginning to wear away and break resulting in more dental work -the teeth that I have intact are strong and healthy.
One dental surgeon asked if there was chlorine in the water where I grew up because I had so many fillings! (Yes

I've been a patient of Dr Caplan for about 6 years now, since moving to Ontario and have always been pleased with his professionalism, punctuality, level of expertise and treatment. The entire staff at his office are warm, engaging, very capable in each of their roles and just a pleasure to work with at every stage - from advanced notifications of appointments right through to processing of paperwork for insurance. I would highly recommend Dr Caplan and his staff if you are looking for a dental practice.

I went to Dr. Rodney at this location since I was a child, and during the 5 years I took a break from regular check ups (oops!) Rodney retired. I had my first real experience with Dr. Caplan today.
I had several fillings done, and he was GREAT. So professional and calming during the whole procedure. I was very afraid of the anesthesia needles, and I didn't feel a thing! He also talks to you the whole time he's working and explains what he's doing and what you're going to feel, which is very reassuring. He has an upbeat demeanor the whole time he's working, and sounds

I went to Dr. Caplan a few years ago and he told me that I had 11 cavaties. I was devastated as I didnt have insurance and the fees were going to be extremely expensive. He filled 4 of my cavaties. He also said that I had to pay for a second X-ray because I waited a few Months between getting cavaties filled. I questioned him about the cavaties because they did not show up on an xray. I also was not comfortable with the way he answered my questions. I felt that the way he answered my questions and concerns were condecending. I decided to go to another dentist. I told my new dentist about
