I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor and psychotherapist with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. I have earned a Masters of Education in Counselling Psychology degree from the University of Victoria. I have also completed a three year Somatic Experiencing Practitioner training and a two year Touch Work for Psychotherapists training with the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute.
The core experiences of psychological trauma are disempowerment and disconnection from others. Recovery, therefore, is based upon the empowerment of the survivor and the creation of new connection. Recovery can take place only within the contezxt of relationships; it cannot occur in isolation. When the nervous system is overwhelmed, a dysfunctional neurological pattern is set in motion.
Somatic Experiencing is a naturalistic approach to resolving and healing trauma developed by Peter Levine, PhD. Based on his observations that highly stressed animals recover from life-threatening situations through the completion of "Fight, Flight or Freeze" responses without any remaining trauma symptoms, Dr. Levine noted the same capacity in humans.
Many therapies utilize touch including massage, physiotherapy, and bodywork. Each therapeutic approach has a specific orientation and focus. The option to include physical touch in our work together can be a useful tool to support a healthy range of regulation and stability in the nervous system as well as other body systems.
Counselling can help us learn more about ourselves, so that we can use our own strengths and wisdom to clear unhealthy beliefs and restore natural rhythms to our experience. With the skillful application of techniques proven to integrate mind, body and spirit I will guide and support you to open to your essential being and improve your valued relationships.
