Jaap Verbeke, General Manager of Portofino Bakery, began as an apprentice in Holland when he was 11 years old. After exploring other career paths, one of which led him to Canada, he returned to his childhood passion and opened a retail bakery in Broadmead Shopping Village in Victoria, BC.
Soon customers were asking for larger quantities than the bakery could supply and in 2004 Portofino acquired a small wholesale bakery, and shifted its wholesale production to this 1800 sq ft location. It was at this time that Jaap joined forces with Ian and Wayne Fatt - local businessmen who are known for their involvement in the Red Barn Markets and Islands West produce.

I have been looking for a few years for low sodium bread as I have a sodium restriction and bread was one if the biggest things I missed in my daily diet.
I came across Portofino bread while shopping at my local Vegetable stand. it was then I started to go there consistently for bread. I do wish tho they stocked more and variety as I like to try some of the other ones they have.
However, I will continue to buy and support local businesses. keep up the great bread making
cheers

I used to love their bread and would crave it. The Peasant Loaf and Sour Dough Loaf were my favorite. I bought a Peasant Loaf tonight and it didn't taste the way it used to, homemade. It tasted like run of the mill mass produced bread. Sadly, I returned it. Their prices do not reflect the quality anymore. I won't be buying their products anymore unless they get back to their previous quality.

I'm a passionate bread lover, and when it comes to store-bought bread there is no better choice in the grocery store than a fresh Portofino loaf. So many varieties to choose from and each of them delicious enough to savour on their own or with your favourite toppings. Since discovering them, I don't think I've bought another company's bread again. Oh, and their cookies are phenomenal too!

Portofino products have been declining in quality ever since the labour shortage. It shows its probably not a great place to work. Their commercial side for delivering to businesses is atrocious in its organization and notoriously disliked by other businesses as they regularly make large mistakes and no attempt to fix them. Sales reps are non existent. I look forward to closing my account

Good bread, bad company. I wrote them an email with a question/complaint regarding weird white spots within the bread. No response other than the computer generated "We will get back to you". Bread must be packaged when warm quite often, as lots of problems with mould. At $6.00+ a loaf, we probably have thrown out more than we have used. Too bad, because it could be a great product. We are now done with them.

Was at the Quality Foods in Harewood Nanaimo today. Went to grab some Portofino buns from the shelf, one of your delivery drivers said oh wait, here let’s get you some fresh ones, grabbed 2 packs of fresh (could feel how fresh they were) from his trays and gave them to me! Always love these baked goods but even more of a fan now!!! AMAZING customer service! Thanks to that driver!

I absolutely LOVE Portofinos bread! I can say that I am obsessed! So delicious! My all time favourite is the peasant loaf! But unfortunately I've stopped buying it lately because the last 5-6 loaves I've bought more than half the slices had giant holes in them! I can work with the small holes but these suckers ain't no joke!

My partner and I stumbled onto the Portofino line of breads last fall and have bought nothing but since! This bread has some weight to it along with delicious flavors. Unlike “Wonder Bread”, the Portofino line is fresh, moist and tasty plus it does go moldy unlike the sterilized, preservative enhanced products out there. When you eat a sandwich made from Portofino bread you will find it tasty, satisfying and filling. We LOVE their entire line of breads and have even introduced family to it who are from the Fraser Valley. We assisted them in their search and now they are committed to this line

My family loves this bread. We love the roasted garlic, the black olive, and the cranberry. I made french toast with the cranberry bread then topped it with fresh cranberry sauce. Wish you had a store in Washington State. I read in the reviews that they have coconut and also carrot cake. can't wait to try them.

My boyfriend bought 2 chocolate covered coconut brownies on Valentine’s Day for us to enjoy... (Deep Cove Market) we’ve had them plenty of times before from Glewood meats they were delicious. Unfortunately they were both stale. And mine was harder than a brick.. couldn’t cut it with a sharp knife or my teeth. We went back after we phoned the… store... there was one left... took it home and it was just as stale. My boyfriend was upset.. it was our valentine treat. So the plastic wrap doesn’t seem to keep them fresh.... and there isn’t any best before date...
